・「に限定されず」の訳し方

 

実施形態の説明の終わりの方で「に限定されず」という表現が出てきます。

 

主語と「に限定されず」の「に」の前にくる語句が主語と補語の関係であれば、”not limited to”が最も一般的な訳語だと思いますが、「いかなる（種類の）～であってよい」と言い換えて“may be any (type of)”と訳すこともできると思います。

 

「筒状電極１の形状も、第一流路Ｆ１を形成できればとくに限定されず」(WO2013172356A1)は、

“the cylindrical electrode 1 may also have any shape as long as the first flow path F1 can be formed therein”

 

「剥離フィルム５は、導電性接着層４に対して剥離性を有するものであれば、特に限定されるものではなく」WO2015046063A1は、

 “the peeling film 5 may be any type of peeling film as long as it has peelability with respect to the conductive adhesive layer 4”

 

一方、「これに限定されず」の「これ」が配置や形状などの構成を表す表現または動作を表す表現の場合、私は「されなくてもよい」「しなくてもよい」と解釈して“need not be (or do)”または“does not have to be (or do)”と訳しています。

 

「上記実施形態では、ノズル２が、筒状電極１内に挿入されているが、これに限定されず」（WO2013172356A1）は、

”while, in the above embodiment, the nozzle 2 is inserted in the cylindrical electrode 1, it need not be inserted therein”

 

「シールド収容体１０は、鍔部１２が上記開放面の周縁全体に形成されているがこれに限定されず」(WO2015046063A1)は、

“while the shield containing body 10 is formed over the entire peripheral of the open face, it need not be formed in this way”

 

「シールド収容体１０は、絶縁層２を有することに限定されない」(WO2015046063A1)は、

“the shield containing body 10 need not include the insulating layer 2”
