・「これにより・・・できる」の訳し方

 

特許明細書では発明や実施形態の効果を記載するために「これにより・・・できる」という表現が使われます。

 

最も一般的には“Thus (or hence), … can be …”のように訳されると思いますが、主語が長い場合読みづらくなると思われます。”Thus (or hence), it is possible to ”は少し固い印象を与えると思います。

 

また、「これにより・・・して・・・できる」のように、ある効果が別の効果をもたらすという記述もよく用いられます。その場合、その都度“Thus (or hence), … can be …”で訳すのは冗長な印象を与えると思います。

 

そこで、私は適宜“This allows (for) …”のように訳しています。“This”はそれまでの構成や動作についての記述を指します。この表現を用いた場合、２つ目の効果も“and thus …”だけで訳すことができます。

 

「これにより、推定した正確なボイラ蒸発量を用いて気体の供給条件を調整することができるので、ボイラ蒸発量を安定させることができる」（特許6543390）は、

“This allows adjustment of the gas supply conditions using the estimated accurate amount of evaporation in the boiler and thus stabilization of the amount of evaporation in the boiler”

 

「これにより、ひずみゲージ４１～４４に対する防塵性および防錆性を向上することが可能となる」（特許6543687）は、

“This allows for improvements in the dust resistance and anticorrosive properties of the distortion gauges 41 to 44”

 

「これにより、撮像光学レンズの像面湾曲と歪曲収差を解消することができ、且つ撮像光学レンズのバックフォーカスを抑えることができ、映像レンズシステム群の小型化を維持することができる」（特許6543399）は、

“This allows for correction of the field curvature and distortion of the imaging optical lenses, as well as allows for shortening of the backfocus of the imaging optical lenses and thus downsizing of the imaging lens systems.”

 

私の経験では、“for”を入れる場合も入れない場合も同じくらいの頻度で使われていると思いますが、a reductionやan improvementなど数えられる名詞がくる場合は、“for”を入れる場合がずっと多いようです。
