・"information"の複数形について

今日はinformationの複数形についての私の提案です。

 

特許明細書にはしばしば符号つきの情報名が複数同時に出てきます。

言うまでもなくinformationは文法上不可算名詞なので、例えば、「情報A、B」のような記述の場合、“information A and information B”と表記するのが正しいと思います。しかし実際には“information A, B” (or information A and B)のように簡略的に記述されることも多く、特許文書に限らずネイティブもそのように記述しているようです。

 

複数の情報名が目的語として記述される場合はそれでもいいと思いますが、複数の情報名が主語で、それぞれが何かに対応し、かつ簡略的に記述したい場合はどうでしょうか。

 

ネット上には、informationに２つの符号をつけて単数扱いにした

“the main and backup track information A and B is passed to serial to parallel converters 20a and 20b and sync finder circuitry 21a 21b”

のような用例もありますが、文法的に違和感を持つ人もいるのではないでしょうか。

一方、文法に忠実にそれぞれの情報をスペルアウトすると、情報名が長い場合または情報の個数が多い場合に冗長な印象を与えてしまうと思います。

 

そのようなとき、私は初出時に“sets of … information A and B”または“pieces of … information A and B”のように複数形にしています。

 

例えば、「属性情報発行装置１は暗号化コンテンツデータ作成装置２、暗号化コンテンツデータ再生装置３ａ、３ｂ、３ｃに対して、・・・それぞれ暗号化属性情報１６－１、１６－２、１６－３、１６－４を付与する」（特開２００６－１１９７５１）は、

 

“Sets of encrypted attribute information 16-1, 16-2, 16-3, and 16-4 are provided to an encrypted content data generation device 2 and encrypted content data playback devices 3a, 3b, and 3c, respectively, …”

 

のように訳出します。複数を表す表現として、各情報が複数の要素からなると思われる場合は“sets of”、数値など単一の要素からなると思われる場合は“pieces of”を使っています。種類が異なる情報の場合は“types of”“kinds of”を使います。
