・「光の透過」の訳語

液晶パネルや光学系の翻訳をしていると、「～に光を透過させる」、「～は光を透過する」「光が～を透過する」、「～への光の透過」などの表現が出てきます。

 

一般に、「～に・・・を透過させる」には「pass・・・through～」が使われますが、「transmit・・・through～」もかなり使われているようです。グーグルの検索では、

 

「pass light through」で７０万件ヒットしますが、「transmit light through」でも２８万１千件ヒットします。

 

「transmit」は、「～は光を透過する」のように、物体や物質が光に自分自身を透過させる場合にも使えます。

 

英語辞書には以下のようにあります。

・if an object or substance transmits sound or light, it allows sound or light to travel through or along it (Longman)

・to cause (as light or force) to pass or be conveyed through space or a medium (Merriam-Webster)

 

グーグルでは、

「glass transmits light」で２３万４千件、「filter transmits light」で１４万１千件ヒットします。

 

「光が～を透過する」の場合には、「pass through」の他に「penetrate (through or into)」

が使われます。

「light passes through」は４０５万件で圧倒的に多いですが、「light penetrates」も１９万６千件ヒットします。

 

名詞形「～への光の透過」はどうでしょうか。

「transmission of light through」で５５万７千件、「passage of light through」で３２万７千件、「penetration of light into」で１２万７千件ヒットします。
