・「であると判断される」の「is determined to be」

何かと立て込んでいて前回から時間が経ってしまいました。

知っている人は当たり前のように使っていると思いますが、私は最近になって、「・・・は～である（～する）と判断される」に「is determined to be (to do)」を使うようになりました。例えば、フローチャートの条件分岐などで出てくる「ステップ１０２でパスワードが無効と判断されると」のような表現は、「if the password is determined to be invalid in step 102」と訳すようになりました。

それまでは、「if it is determined in step 102 that the password is invalid」のようにオーソドックスに訳していました。「is determined to」は、主語が人間で、「～しようと決心している」という場合に使うものと思っていたからです。また、私の知る限り、英和辞典の「determine」には、「is considered to be」（とみなされる）「is believed to be」（とみられる）のような用法は載っていません。

ちなみに、「と判断する」の用例を載せている英語辞典はあまり多くなく、載せている場合も「is determined that」「determine that」の形です。

・It was determined that she had died of natural causes.（Oxford） 

・Experts have determined that the signature was forged.（Longman） 

一方、グーグルの検索では、「is determined to be * in step」で約5260万、「is determined in step * to be」でも約724万出てきます。「と判断される」の「is determined to be (to do)」は辞書にはない用法ですが、技術英語では慣用表現と言えそうです。一語ですが語数を節約でき、判断される対象が冒頭に来るので読み手は読みやすいと思います。

・it is determined that the password is invalid （８ワード）

・the password is determined to be invalid （７ワード）
